A Complete Guide to the War of the Gods Photo Story

This page brings together my photographic record of a Theyyam performance based on the conflict between Vali and Sugriva from the Ramayana. The short video above gives the movement, rhythm and atmosphere of the ritual; the linked photo essays slow the action down so that individual expressions, costumes and stages of the encounter can be studied more closely.

Theyyam is a living ritual tradition of North Malabar rather than a performance arranged only for visitors. Music, invocation, costume, body painting and movement allow a sacred story to be experienced within the community. The vivid red dress, elaborate headgear and intense gestures are visually striking, but they belong to a religious and cultural setting that deserves attention and respect.

Read the story in sequence

  1. Theyyam begins and the ritual space is prepared
  2. Vali appears and waits for his opponent
  3. Sugriva arrives and accepts the challenge
  4. The rivals meet and the provocation begins
  5. The story reaches the sword fight

Viewed together, the series moves from preparation to confrontation. The still photographs reveal details that pass quickly in the video: a performer searching through the crowd, the first appearance of a character, a shift into trance-like movement and the moment when ceremonial weapons enter the scene.

Photographing a ritual responsibly

These images are my observations of one event, not a complete explanation of every form of Theyyam. Traditions, characters and ritual practices vary between shrines and communities. I have therefore kept the captions close to what was visible during the sequence and presented the photographs as a travel photo essay rather than claiming religious authority.

If you are new to the series, begin with the first chapter and follow the internal links in order. The video is best watched after the photographs, when the characters and stages of the story are already familiar.
