Against an almost completely dark background, a street vendor and his cart are illuminated by a small working light. Rows of colourful bottles hang above him, making the stall visible while everything beyond it disappears into night. The isolation of that light is what gives the photograph its emotional weight.
For some people, nightlife means restaurants, music and leisure. For others, it means continuing to work after most of the city has gone home. The vendor’s night is not entertainment; it is livelihood. Photographing this contrast made me think about how differently the same hour can be experienced.
The empty black space is essential to the frame. It separates the vendor from distractions and directs attention to his small island of colour. Low-light photography can lose detail, but here that limitation supports the subject: the darkness communicates uncertainty, solitude and the long hours around the stall.
I do not know the vendor’s full story, so I do not want to turn one moment into an assumption about his life. What the photograph honestly records is a person working late, carefully arranging and selling his goods. It asks us to notice the labour that often remains invisible behind the brighter version of a city at night.
