Reading Time: 2 minutes

A Simple Exercise to Start Writing Now

Writers often wait for a perfect idea, a quiet room or a sudden burst of confidence. The problem is that waiting can become a habit. A better way to begin is to lower the pressure: write one honest paragraph about what is directly in front of you, what happened today or what question is occupying your mind.

The first draft does not need to be polished. Its job is to create material. Once words exist on the page, they can be rearranged, clarified or removed. An empty page offers no such possibilities.

A ten-minute writing prompt

Set a timer for ten minutes and choose one concrete memory. Describe where you were, what you could see and what changed. Avoid editing while the timer is running. If you get stuck, write the sentence “What I remember next is…” and continue from there.

When time is up, underline the most vivid sentence. Use it as the opening of a second paragraph and add one specific detail for each sense that genuinely belongs in the scene. You may discover that the small memory contains a larger idea about travel, friendship, fear or change.

From exercise to blog post

After a short break, read the draft aloud. Remove repetition, replace vague phrases with concrete details and give the piece a title that reflects its real subject. Add an introduction only if the reader needs context, and end once the central thought has landed.

The important step is beginning before confidence arrives. Regular small exercises build fluency and help ideas reveal themselves through the act of writing. Write now, revise later, and allow an ordinary observation to become the starting point of a meaningful story.

My friend, Carl of "the old fellow goes running" informed me after seeing one of my posts,  hand written  that January 23rd is Hand writing day. I remembered that just now. So I decided to do this.

So here is my question.

When was the last time you wrote something on a paper? When was the last time you wrote your mother tongue, if you have one different from English?

If you haven't written anything in a long time, why don't you join the challenge? Write something and post a picture. Challenge someone else. Lets all write!

Are you writing something right now?
