Reading Time: 2 minutes

Sometimes all we need is a little push. So today I am trying to give you that push, to do some photography.

I know your excuses. You don’t have a fancy camera?  You don’t have enough time? Don’t worry. I am not going to leave you like that. 😉

Things Needed :

  • A candle, a lighter, Your mobile phone and a dark room.

So obviously you have a mobile phone and it’s got a camera.  And I hope you will be home at night. So you gotta do it, unless you are extremely lazy and hates photography!! 😉

What to do in step by step :

  • Set Up : Light up the candle, set it up on a table or somewhere safe and switch off the lights ( as it is done at night)

Now Get your phone. Here I am talking through the eyes of my own Android phone. Some latest phones are really amazing and will help you to get awesome images.

If you click right away, just like that, most probably you will get an image like this.

So we can look into certain settings now.

Initial settings at Auto

Initial settings at Auto

The auto settings looks like this. White balance : Auto; ISO : Auto and so on.

  • So lets first change ISO settings.  Set ISO : 100
At ISO 100

At ISO 100

You can see the first difference, when we changed to ISO 100

Now lets reduced the exposure a bit. Now you can see it is 0.0

  • Change exposure from 0.0 to -2.0
Exposure at -2.0

Exposure at -2.0

If you are wondering why changing the exposure, check the “how to take sunset picture with mobile phone” post.

So now lets add some colours to our experiment.

  • Go to settings and change White balance to  “Cloudy”
White Balance : Cloudy

White Balance : Cloudy

The change is quite visible. Right?

But still it doesn’t look very good. It still is yet another snapshot. We want to create something that we can take print out and hang it on the wall.

So lets change one more setting.

  • Change the Metering to “Spot”
Metering : Spot

Metering : Spot

Don’t worry about the technicalities of Spot metering and all.

  • Now just experiment with different angles to get a crisp, sharp beautiful candle light image.

Here goes some of my attempts.

I hope you will definitely try this one out. All the images above are taken  using Samsung Mobile phone camera. No Editing done on any images. So you will get a similar result.

You can also try out with whatever camera you have.
